Still Life
Still Life opens Thursday 18th June. Bringing together fourteen artists - Michael Parekōwhai, Jude Rae, Fiona Pardington, Elizabeth Thomson, Heather Straka, Joe Sheehan, Séraphine Pick, Martin Basher, Richard Killeen, Dick Frizzell, Andrew Drummond, Ben Pearce, Neil Dawson, and Paul Hartigan - this exhibition examines the breadth and depth of something as simple as 'still-life'.
We begin grounded in painting with the likes of Heather Straka, but are pulled into Fiona Pardington's photographs and further still into the world of sculpture.
The tradition of 'still-life' has never been homogenous, this exhibition honours the textured lineage of the practice and invites contemplation. What compels us to capture an object in time, why this image, why now? Still-lifes within Egyptian tombs were thought to manifest their depictions for those in the afterlife; still-life has been used to record and educate, to remind us of the ephemerality of beautiful things, as explorations of shape and form. Honed and delicate, or wild and exploratory still-lifes offer us moments.
Join us to celebrate this exhibition in the gallery from 5pm Thursday 18th June.
