Overview

Andrew Drummond is one of New Zealand’s most exceptional sculptors. Over the course of several decades, Drummond has built a career that embraces sculpture, installation, video, drawing and photography. He is a craftsman, an environmental advocate, an inventor. His work forces deep consideration of humankind’s existence, our movements (both physically and demographically), and our impact on the world.

Following his training at Teachers College in New Zealand, he studied Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Drummond’s early practice saw him emerge as a pioneer of performance art, highlighting disquiet about important environmental and political issues in the 1970s and 1980s. He considers the entanglements of the human body, ecology, and dislocated histories within the landscapes of New Zealand.

From 1992 until 2003, Drummond held the position of senior lecturer in sculpture at the University of Canterbury, School of Fine Art. He now works full time on public and private sculpture commissions in his Christchurch studio.

Drummond’s work is held in various public and private collections and he has been commissioned to create a number of outdoor public sculptures. Whether creating meditative sculptural installations using natural and found materials or a large-scale dynamic kinetic sculpture, his work speaks to the natural environment and continues to engage and intrigue.

In 2010, a major exhibition 'Action / Observation / Reflection', curated by Jennifer Hay and concentrating on 3 decades of Drummond’s career (1980-2010) was held at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, accompanied by a major exhibition catalogue.
