Dick Frizzell - Icons
For over six decades, Dick Frizzell has been a defining force in New Zealand art, blending high and low culture, fine art and commercial aesthetics, and a deep love for Kiwiana with a mischievous wit that continues to captivate audiences.
Frizzell's work spans a remarkable range-from traditional landscapes to pop art, from cheeky reimaginings of national icons to deep explorations of visual storytelling. His art has become interwoven with the fabric of Aotearoa's cultural identity.
In this exclusive collaboration with Glorious Digital, Frizzell revisits one of his most beloved motifs-Charlie, the Four Square Man-and reinvents him in 28 legendary guises. These playful yet meticulously crafted variations celebrate figures from music, art, history, and pop culture, showcasing Frizzell's signature approach of balancing nostalgia, satire, and sheer artistic joy.
This project marks a bold new step in Frizzell's career-bringing his vision into the digital realm, expanding the ways we experience and engage with his art. Each character variation has been brought to life with exquisite detail, offering collectors and art lovers a fresh perspective on one of New Zealand's most recognisable cultural icons.
For the first time, Glorious will be exhibiting these works in both Auckland and Wellington from March 6, 2024.
Auckland: The Pavilions, 10 Te Ara Tahuhu, Britomart, Auckland
Wellington: James Blackie Gallery, Clyde Quay Wharf, Te Aro, Wellington
