The Joy of Colour - Karl Maughan
We are proud to announce a one-night-only event this week, featuring an
The Joy of Colour spans 40 years of Karl's celebrated career, with imagery from his earliest paintings in 1987, to paintings finished this year.
For over four decades, Karl Maughan has been one of New Zealand's most distinctive painters, celebrated for his immersive garden landscapes bursting with life, light, and colour. His meticulously composed scenes transform familiar flora into extraordinary worlds of pattern, rhythm, and intensity.
Depending on how close you stand when you view Karl's paintings, his work sits at the intersection of realism and abstraction - very close up, you can feel each brush stroke as an individual mark and expression; zoom out and it becomes a distinctive botanical scene. The prints in The Joy of Colour assist with this illusion, providing discrete scenes, pulling your eye deep into one of Karl's painted surfaces.
This project represents a rare opportunity for collectors to experience Maughan's work in a new dimension, an intimate study of the details that have defined his practice, and a celebration of the joy that colour continues to bring to his art and to those who experience it.
