BRENT WONG | Paintings from the artist's collection
"includes ten never-before-seen paintings on public view for the very first time..."

For more than fifty years, Brent Wong has been one of New Zealand's most distinctive and enduring artists. His surrealist-inflected landscapes have become icons of the New Zealand imagination. This exhibition presents an extraordinary collection of Wong's paintings-drawn from the artist's private trust. The collection includes ten never-before-seen paintings on public view for the very first time, as well as screen prints of some of his most important works.

Although Brent has spent much of his life in Wellington, there have been few opportunities to see his work here. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the practice of one of New Zealand's most important painters. His paintings are instantly recognisable: lone buildings adrift in luminous, open plains; unlikely objects hovering in vast skies; sharp light, long shadows, and an eerie stillness that invites both reverie and reflection. His ability to manipulate scale, space, and mood places him firmly within the lineage of Surrealism, though his work remains deeply grounded in the landscapes and psychology of New Zealand.
