Marita Hewitt's spectacular A Yawning Gulf (Above) draws on the extensive worldwide history of quilt-making by women as a practical means of gaining comfort or protection.
Utilising her own textiles, along with those passed down from her grandmother, the intricate individual sky paintings were created following Hewitt’s different experiences and observations of the sky, painted in the studio, then hand-stitched to form a timeless assemblage.
A Yawning Gulf (Above) functions as what Marita describes as ‘an existentialist survival blanket’ – encompassing the idea of a sky-cloak, filled with wonder, enveloping and protecting the viewer from above.
