The fragility and vulnerability of New Zealand native birds has been a long-running theme throughout Crystal Chain Gang’s practice, and this is demonstrated with their recent creation ‘Elwin.’
The chandelier was made in honour of a fearless kākāpo who was part of the reintroduction efforts at Sanctuary Mountain in Maungatautari. His adventurous spirit and multiple escape attempts back to the wild inspired Crystal Chain Gang artists Jim Dennison and Leanne Williams to pay tribute to him in the form of an art piece. As they describe: "Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari's remarkable success in reintroducing kakapo to the mainland has deeply touched us and Elwin holds a special place in our hearts. In support of their ongoing conservation work, we participated in a recent Gala Dinner and Auction by creating the ‘Elwin’ chandelier, with the proceeds dedicated to the sanctuary's vital cause."
