Art is the pinnacle of the creative mind and a joy to have in your life. Wonderfully, New Zealand art punches well above its weight and I’m proud to work with artists and collectors to celebrate this.
James Blackie opened his new space on Wellington's waterfront in late 2024, situated between Te Papa and Oriental Bay, continuing his two-decade legacy as a leading New Zealand art dealer. Representing outstanding New Zealand artists, he exhibits their work in solo, group, and project exhibitions. In addition to primary market representation, he also manages secondary market sales of significant artworks, consults for corporate, commercial, and public collections, and serves as a trustee on the Te Papa Foundation board.
Reflecting on the journey to his new gallery, James shares:
"Since closing my last gallery, Page Blackie, in 2019, I have spent the last few years connecting collectors with artists, often through exhibitions in artists' studios. But pop-up spaces never work for fine art as they're not beautiful enough for a prestigious exhibition. In late 2024, timing and opportunity magically coincided as I was looking for a space to exhibit Joe Sheehan's first solo exhibition in Wellington. Incredibly, the old Mojo café in the iconic former Overseas Passenger Terminal on the Wellington waterfront became available. I purchased the space and am now proud to occupy Wellington's newest dealer gallery space."
Beyond running his gallery, James continues to provide expert consulting across various aspects of fine art.
"Under my fine art consulting hat, I perform art collection consulting, fine art valuations, art installations, conservation and framing advice, art transport support-you name it. If you need help in the often bewildering art world, I'm here."
His approach is highly client-focused, whether working with seasoned collectors or those acquiring their first artwork.
"Most importantly, I focus on your collection. So whether you are looking for the next exceptional artwork or your very first, or you have too many works and need breathing room, I can help."
In addition to his gallery and consulting work, James is also the Director of Art at Glorious Digital - a company that helps artists create and sell exceptional digital fine artworks.
"Glorious helps artists make and sell exceptional digital fine artworks for you to enjoy on digital screens in your own home (and for those who can cope with the terminology, these are blockchain-authenticated NFTs)."
His contributions to the arts extend beyond commercial ventures. He plays an active role in philanthropy and arts advocacy, particularly through his work with the Te Papa Foundation and other charitable projects.
"I am enormously proud to be a Te Papa Foundation Trustee. I work with charities-most recently as a fine art consultant for the Sallies on their spectacular 'Offering' project."
Despite his many professional roles, James emphasises that his most cherished role is a personal one.
"And, despite having rattled off all my professional hats, I'll conclude with my most important: father of two boys and husband to an amazing woman, who is a weapon in her own profession."
